About Us...

The first Habitat ReStore in Charlotte was opened in 1996 as a fundraising division of Habitat for Humanity Charlotte. The store is located on Wilkinson Blvd. In 2006, a second location opened on Wendover Rd. Through the sales of new and used merchandise, the two ReStores have provided the funds to build over 25 houses in the Charlotte community!

What is a ReStore?

A ReStore is a store that accepts donations of new and gently used items from individuals and businesses in the community, and sells those items to the public at a reduced cost, usually 50-70 percent of the original retail value. All proceeds go toward building Habitat homes with the local Habitat affiliate.

Mission of the Habitat Charlotte ReStore

Through the selling of donated construction and home related items:
- Increase the number of homes built with low-income families through Habitat for Humanity of Charlotte.
- Prevent usable items from being put in landfills.
- Provide quality building materials to the general public at discounted prices.

Motivation of the Habitat Charlotte ReStore

Charlie & Beth Coates are the proud owners of a house funded by the ReStore. Families like this serve as our motivation to keep helping other people in need.

History

From 1996 to 2004, the Charlotte ReStore funded approximately 1 home per year. In 2004 the Board of Directors decided to renovate the original location, on Wilkinson Blvd., and open a 2nd ReStore in Charlotte.
Hundreds of volunteers pitched in for the Extreme Makeover of the Wilkinson location in early 2005.

The second location, on Wendover Rd, opened in February 2006. Operation Transformation started in late December, and the big box (once an old grocery store) was transformed into a 34,000 sq. ft. ReStore. Construction was completed in February 2007 turning the remainder of the former warehouse into Julia's Coffee shop, the Habitat for Humanity of Charlotte affiliate offices, and living space for full-time volunteers.

With two locations, the ReStore is estimated to fund the building of 10-12 new Habitat homes each year, bringing the community closer to reaching the goal of eliminating substandard housing in Charlotte, NC.
